The Mazarrón area

The small town of Mazarrón has long been a popular holiday destination for Spanish people but is now attracting visitors from across Europe, many of whom are choosing to make a new life here.

The micro-climate means you can depend on more than 300 sunny days a year and with 35 km of beautiful beaches on your doorstep, you’ll be able to make the most of every one of them.

When you feel the need of city life, you’re not too far from Murcia where, as well as a fascinating historical centre, there are shops and boutiques where you can pick up handcrafted goods or some of the latest designer clothes at bargain prices.

At the coast, Puerto de Mazarrón is known by expats as the Cornwall of Spain, because of its pretty coves and harbour and its long sandy stretches of beach.

Mazarrón has four Blue Flag beaches, Rihuete, La Reya, Nares and Casteller, so you know they’ll be safe, beautifully clean, well serviced and with excellent facilities.

Casteller and La Reya are also both fully accessible to people with disabilities, so even if you need a wheelchair to get around, you’ll still be able to enjoy the beach and go for a swim.

As the sea is usually about 5º warmer here, due to the shelter of the mountain ranges, it’s an ideal place to swim or master a new sport like windsurfing or water skiing.

There are several good Dive Centres in and around Mazarron including PADI certified centres.  The coastal area around Mazarron is well known in Spain for it's excellent quality diving.

MUST SEE ITEMS...

1. Cabo Tiñoso

The Guns at Cabo Tiñoso are simply not to be missed!!!  Spectacular views, peace & quiet!

Take a BBQ and spend the day if you want to do like the Spanish!

Directions

Step 1)  From Camposol take the motorway towards Puerto de Mazarron and go all the way to the end.  Turn left at the roundabout.  At the next roundabout (the tractor one) turn left.  Right at the next roundabout.  Right again at the next one (heading for the Puerto).  Then at the next roundabout (near Lidl and the shops).

Step 2) Turn left for Cartegena.  Follow the road down to the sea and be amazed for a lovely view!!  At the roundabout (with the large boat on) turn left heading for Isla Plana and La Azohia.  Keep going down this road for quite some time until you arrive at another roundabout with a boat on.

Step 3)  Turn left heading for Cartegena.  Within a short distance you will see a number of wheelie bins at a right hand turning.  Take this turning and follow the road for some miles, passing through a small village.  There is only one more turning to make which is quite some way along this road.  You will eventually arrive at a fork in the road where you need to turn left – there is a sign there saying “no passeo” but don’t worry it’s an old one!

2. Bolneuvo

Bolnuevo hosts the largest beach in the immediate area.

Also home to some interesting natural rock formations and other interesting natural things!!

Directions

From Camposol take the motorway towards Puerto de Mazarron and go all the way to the end.  Turn left at the roundabout.  At the next roundabout (the tractor one) turn right.  Right at the next roundabout and keep driving until you see the beach on your left and the rocks on the right.

For the nudist beaches carry on past the main beach and follow the road up the hill, then turn left (they are signposted) and follow the dirt road for as far as you like there are several quiet coves off the road.  The road is very bad so either drive extremely slowly, hire a Quad bike or walk!

3. Puerto de Mazarrón

Lots of beaches, a brand new Marina, plenty of bars and restaurants, tons of shops….Puerto de Mazarrón has it all.

Especially worth visiting after sunset!

Directions

Option 1 – For the shops

From Camposol take the motorway towards Puerto de Mazarron and go all the way to the end.  Turn left at the roundabout.  At the next roundabout (the tractor one) turn left.  Right at the next roundabout.  Right again at the next one (heading for the Puerto).  Then at the next roundabout (near Lidl and the shops) go straight over and explore!

Option 2 – For the beach

From Camposol take the motorway towards Puerto de Mazarron and go all the way to the end.  Turn left at the roundabout.  At the next roundabout (the tractor one) turn right for Puerto de Mazarron and Bolneuvo.  Left at the next roundabout and into the Puerto.

4. Murcia

Murcia is the capital and definitely the main place to go shopping with 2 new large shopping centres

and many large stores on a huge retail park.

There is a more traditional side to the capital as well but we have yet to see it as the shops are a BIG distraction!!

The THADER Shopping Park project alone is set to become the most complete Shopping and Leisure Centre in the Region.

The THADER Shopping Park has 190,000 m² of commercial space, of which 80,000 m² correspond to the Shopping Centre and 28,000 m² to the first IKEA to open in the region of Murcia.

Directions

From Camposol take the motorway towards Totana.  The road splits after a few kilometres and you should go to the right for Murcia.  Once approaching Murcia for the shopping centres take Salida (exit) 762B.

5. Local Markets

Puerto de Mazarron (every Sunday)

This is the best market in the area – tons of fruit & veg. and plenty of clothing stalls.

Typically Spanish.  Held every Sunday in the port.

Park in the bus station and then follow the crowds to find it!

Cañadas de Romero (1st and 3rd Sunday of each month)

Actually a car boot sale rather than a market.  More English than Spanish.  Plenty of bargains.

From Camposol turn right onto motorway heading for Totana and then take the 1st exit, left at the roundabout to pass under motorway.  At other side of bridge turn right at roundabout.  Follow to next roundabout and head for El Pareton.  After approx ½ mile the market/carboot sale is on the right hand side (in Cañadas de Romero).

Totana (Wednesday only)

From Camposol turn right onto motorway heading for Totana, follow into town.  At roundabout go straight on and take any side road on the right.  The market is to the right of the main street.

Mazarron (Sunday only)

Take the motorway to Mazarron coming off at the first Mazarron junction (signed Mazarron Norte), follow into town go across roundabout and go into town.  Health centre on right and market in square behind it.  Also worth visiting is the Church of Maria in the square.
